An excerpt of the new Tower of the Deep:
"Freedom never seems to mean much - to those who are free. From what he could see, they just take it for granted. But Dringle couldn’t help a deep longing for it sometimes. Especially on days like today. What would it be like if he could, just once, refuse to do what he was ordered to?
He trotted along next to the horse-drawn wagon – his usual post - shivering in sodden misery. The roads in town were running with water, and the way home from the market didn’t look any drier. His boots sloshed the mud onto his legs, and a nagging drizzle weighed down his rain poncho and made it draggle in the mud too.
The whole town smelled of wet grass, woodsmoke from the homes, and sodden horse droppings, made more pungent by the damp. Dringle’s owners rode in the wagon under umbrellas. It was tempting to stare at them, the mistress and her daughter snug and dry under their big, spread umbrella."
